The Fourth of July always brings out the best of small-town spirit on the Mid-Peninsula, and 2026 is shaping up to be the biggest one yet. This year marks America's 250th birthday, 250 years since the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776, and communities across San Mateo County are leaning into the milestone with extra fanfare. If you live in San Carlos, Belmont, or Redwood City, you are surrounded by parades, festivals, fireworks, and family fun, most of it just minutes from your front door.
As top San Carlos real estate agents who have helped families put down roots across the Mid-Peninsula for more than 20 years, we love a good reason to celebrate the place we call home. Here is your guide to celebrating the Fourth of July in 2026, from the main event in Redwood City to standout options across the Peninsula and into San Francisco.
If you only make it to one celebration this year, make it Redwood City. The Redwood City Family 4th of July is the largest Independence Day celebration in Northern California, and it has been a beloved tradition run by volunteers of the Peninsula Celebration Association since 1939. The 2026 theme is "Celebrating America 250," and the whole day is free and open to everyone.
Here is what the day looks like on Saturday, July 4, 2026:
Pancake breakfast (8 to 11 a.m.). Start the morning with the Redwood City Fire Department at the Marshall Street fire station. Breakfast is $10 and benefits the Redwood City Firefighters Association.
The parade (10 a.m.). You will know it is time when you hear the cannon. The parade winds 1.3 miles through historic downtown Redwood City with floats, marching bands, classic cars, and local heroes. Entries that work in red, white, and blue or an America 250 theme are eligible for special awards this year.
The festival (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.). Downtown fills up with arts and crafts vendors, food booths, a music stage, and family activities. Many local nonprofits use the festival as a major fundraiser, so it is a feel-good way to spend the afternoon.
Classic car show. After the parade, head to the Winslow lot to admire rows of vintage and show cars.
Evening at the Port (from 7 p.m.). Cap off the night down at the Port of Redwood City with live music and food trucks, leading up to a fireworks show over the water at approximately 9:30 p.m.
Parking near the route and the Port fills up fast, so plan to walk, bike, or carpool if you can. A quick heads-up worth repeating every year: all consumer fireworks, including "safe and sane" varieties, are illegal in Redwood City. Leave the show to the professionals.
Here is some good news for anyone who calls the City of Good Living home. While San Carlos does not host its own large Fourth of July fireworks show, its central location means you are a short hop from one of the best celebrations in the Bay Area. Redwood City's parade and festival are just minutes up El Camino, which makes San Carlos a fantastic home base for the holiday. It is one of the everyday perks of living in such a well-connected pocket of the Peninsula.
The same goes for Belmont. Fireworks are illegal within Belmont city limits, and the city itself points residents toward the professional displays in nearby Redwood City. Belmont does a great job with summer programming at Twin Pines Park, so keep an eye on the city's summer concert calendar for free music around the holiday weekend. Then make the quick drive over to the Port of Redwood City for the fireworks.
This kind of access to events, parks, and community life is exactly what draws families to our Mid-Peninsula communities in the first place. You get the quiet, tree-lined neighborhood feel with big-city celebrations a few minutes away.
Want to mix it up or spend the long weekend hopping between celebrations? The wider Peninsula offers plenty of red, white, and blue. Details can shift from year to year, so confirm with each organizer before you head out.
Foster City. The daytime celebration around Leo Ryan Park returns with a pancake breakfast, live music, and the popular Family and Dog Parade. Note that the lagoon fireworks show is on hold again for 2026 due to construction at the new community center, so plan to catch fireworks in Redwood City.
Half Moon Bay. The Ol' Fashioned 4th of July Parade and Festival turns Main Street into a charming coastside celebration with a pancake breakfast, a fun zone, food, and small-town character. A great option if you want to pair the holiday with a beach day.
Menlo Park. The annual Fourth of July Parade and Festival is a classic family-friendly outing just south of Redwood City.
San Mateo. Look for July Fourth in the Park festivities along with the long-running Highlands neighborhood celebration featuring a parade, pie-baking contest, and cardboard boat races.
Pacifica. Head to the coast for the Fourth of July Celebration in the Park at Frontierland Park, with food, games, rides, and live music from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Millbrae and Los Altos. Both host festive summer celebrations worth a look if you are exploring the broader Peninsula.
For the classic big-city spectacle, San Francisco delivers. The city's waterfront fireworks show is best viewed from the Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39 area, where barges light up the bay after dark. One local tip earned through experience: summer fog can roll in and hide the show, so check conditions before you commit to a spot, and bundle up regardless.
A few other showstoppers within easy reach of the Mid-Peninsula:
Golden Gate Park hosts a patriotic Fourth of July symphony concert for a more relaxed, family-friendly afternoon.
Mountain View puts on a fireworks show set to the San Francisco Symphony at Shoreline Amphitheatre, with free viewing areas nearby.
Angel Island offers a fireworks cruise for anyone wanting a memorable view from the water.
There is something about a hometown Fourth of July that reminds you why you love where you live. The parade route packed with neighbors, the smell of the pancake breakfast, the kids waving flags, the fireworks reflecting off the water at the Port. These are the moments that make a house feel like home, and they are a big part of what makes the Mid-Peninsula such a special place to plant roots.
