San Mateo is very centrally located on the San Francisco Peninsula and is an intersecting point for 3 major freeways – highways 101, 92, and 280. This makes it a great city for accessing so many other parts of the peninsula and the bay area. San Mateo is one of the largest cities on the peninsula with a population of about 105,000 people and it covers about 16 square miles. It is part of the San Mateo Foster City school district and has 12 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, 2 K-8 schools, and 3 high schools. It also boasts a Mandarin immersion elementary school and a Spanish immersion elementary school. The city is home to an array of historic buildings, parks and entertainment areas perfect for families and visitors. Central Park, one of the city’s main parks, hosts family friendly events including Ice Skating, an Easter Egg Hunt and various sporting tournaments. Downtown is very vibrant with a variety of restaurants, retail shopping and a movie theater. Beyond the city amenities, you can enjoy hiking trails, picnic areas and water activities just off the Bay at Coyote Point Park.
